Model Presentation Outline Notes

Name: Jonathan, Benjamin

Part One: Background (opening based on persuasive paragraph and reflection question about the issues in general)

  • Why is this issue a global one? What is the main problem?
Torture and unfair treatment towards prisoners is a global issue, as just about every nation has some sort of a prisoner, and unfair treatment results from the fact that the wardens or jailers don’t think they deserve to have any human rights. The main problem is that it is very inhumane, and very cruel, even for a prisoner, as everyone has human rights, no matter how low they get.

  • How is this issue affecting the world?
Torture of prisoners, and unfair treatment, is affecting the world as every day, a prisoner somewhere is being tortured and not only the prisoners are being affected, but hundreds of thousands of people disagree strongly with the way they treat prisoners, as it is not fair.

  • What is being done to stop, prevent or fix this issue?
Major political leaders have been trying to abolish this treatment, and there are many social groups, and organizations who are also trying to make a stand and spread the word on the unfair treatment of prisoners.

Part 2- Case Study

What are some background informations?
Over 100 prisoners have died in prison since 2002 and over 7 prisoners were tortured to death. In the 770 prisoners who are in Guantanamo, 500 had been released without any trials or charges, 200 are still in prison but only 23 are in the prison because of crime. Prisoners had to wear blinders, ear muffs, hand cuffs and masks because they were not allowed to talk to others and interact with others.

Interactive Activity What did I do?
We thought of some topics on the issues of the world, try to let people join our organization and help them raise awareness about the problem.

Part Three: Action Plan:

What do I propose to do?

In an attempt to “spread awareness” against torture, I would send via messages, or just luanch a text messaging service to all the people that lives in the Pudong area and the Puxi area as well. This can spread the word to other people a lot faster, well when you compare it to spreading the awareness to those public and international schools.

The parts of my plan:

The purpose- Why am I doing this action?

The reason that I am doing this action is to prevent torture going on .

The message- Why should people be informed about this issue?
The more people who know what is happening, then the more likely that they will speak up. You think that if more people speak up, and are supported by the general population, the world can work together to say that human rights must be protected at all times, in other words, we are talking about communication.

A short-term plan for achieving my goal (remember is should be kept simple and not too ambitious- again make sure it CAN actually be done). What do I propose to do?
The plan is to learn more about the torture for yourself to understand it better and why you are not supporting torture from happening. Also, I wish to raise awareness in both Pudong and Puxi SAS about the torture of prisoners.

A long-term plan for achieving my goal. What is my long-term plan?
Keeping the awareness going on until I graduate from college.

Reference to information on wiki and other resources: What references do I make?
You name who said which quote for each slide, well if you have a quote, and you give or name the URLs for each pictures you have, videos and poems or other literature taken from websites. You name the website and which page you got you literature and others.

Part 4-

Torture -- the intentional infliction of severe mental or physical pain or suffering -- is a violation of the most basic of all human rights. Throughout history, many documents and agreements have been created to restrict or eliminate this most inhumane of all human actions. The Geneva Conventions, for example, was introduced in 1864 to ensure that prisoners and civilians are treated humanely during times of war. Article 5 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations in 1948 states that, "no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." The United Nations created a comprehensive legal document called the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment which went into force on June 26, 1987, outlawing torture in the more than 100 countries which signed the convention. However, since then government-sanctioned torture has taken place in 150 countries, and in 70 of those countries torture by state officials was widespread.

Anyone can be a victim of torture -- soldiers, prisoners, men, women and children, young or old. Members of a particular religious, political or ethnic group are often the targets. A torture victim isn't the only one to suffer -- the whole family and community can be affected. Torture is sometimes used by one group to send a warning to other members of a different religious or political group. The pain a torture victim experiences is only the beginning -- many victims suffer psychological scars for years. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common, causing flashbacks, depression, nightmares and insomnia

Organizations like the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims help torture victims rebuild their lives with medical and psychological treatment, as well advocate for the elimination of torture around the world. There are more than 200 rehabilitation centers and programs around the world helping torture survivors. Other organizations like Amnesty International monitor torture violations around the world and help bring legal actions to stop torture.

June 26 is being observed each year, as the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. It is an opportunity to educate our, as in your community about the widespread presence of torture around the world. It's a chance to help urge the countries that haven't signed the Convention against torture to do so, and to ensure that countries that have never allow torture to take place.
